Almost everyone feels depressed at some point in their lives. Sometimes these
feelings are short lived and resolve on their own. However for a significant
number of people the negative feelings may persist for weeks, months or even
years. When this occurs it is called "clinical depression". Clinical depression
usually does not go away on it's own and requires treatment to improve.
Clinical depression can negatively impact a persons life in many ways. People
with clinical depression may have difficulty maintaining important relationships in
their lives, they may no longer be able to enjoy the things that they once did, they
may feel that they are worthless, unlovable or deserve to be punished. People
suffering from clinical depression often feel that there is no hope for them to
ever feel better. They may turn to drugs or alcohol or consider taking their own
lives in an attempt to end the negative feelings.
Many people suffering from clinical depression feel that it is their own fault and
see their condition as a form of personal or moral weakness. This, however, is
not the case. Clinical depression is the result of a chemical imbalance in the brain
and is a medical condition.
The good news is that clinical depression is a very treatable condition. A number
of good medications and "talk" therapies exist that can help people to feel better
and regain their lives.
Windham & Leibovich employ a combination of these "talk therapies" including
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and
Rational Emotive Therapy (RET) to assist people who are suffering from
depression.
